Top 5 - Albums of 2007

Permalink 12/28/07 11:12, by jamesey, Categories: Music

Here we go! My top 5 albums of 2007. The top three were really tough to put in order but I'm fine with my final decision.

1. Silverchair - Young Modern - I was thrilled to hear their new album was awesome. I've liked these Australians since I first heard their teenage album, Frogstomp, back in 1996. They've matured in every album since then, and Young Modern is just brilliant from start to finish. Straight Lines and The Man Who Knew Too Much are my favorite tracks, but I can play this one from start to finish without skipping anything.

Follow up:

2. Arcade Fire - Neon Bible - In their first album, everyone compared The Arcade Fire to the Talking Heads and U2. I think in Neon Bible, they had more of their own style. Neon Bible flows from start to finish and there is a theme of observations about the world's state. I know I'm ranking it number 2, but I should really put it at 1.b. Intervention & No Cars Go were 2 of the best songs from 2007.

3. VHS or Beta - Bring on the Comets - This album always make me feel like getting up and dancing. The synth and new wave beats will win over fans of 80's music. The catchy guitar riffs and funky bass lines will win over rock fans. I was lucky enough to see these guys live this year and they really brought it. It was really hard to put this one at number three. It could really be 1.c. Bring on the Comets, Burn it All Down, & Can't Believe a Single Word were my favorite tracks.

4. Apparat - Walls - I listen to a lot of electronic and ambient music, especially at work because it helps me concentrate. Walls from Apparat was by far the best album from this genre I hear all year. Their are some great natural instrument sounds mixed with some great break beats and electronic noises. Walls is a real symphony. If the Classical Masters like Beethoven, Mozart, & Bach were alive today, this is the type of album they'd make. Apparat is just one guy, Sascha Ring from Berlin.

5. Spoon - Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga - Spoon is getting a lot of airplay lately and deservedly so. Their album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga is super from start to finish (a common theme among my top 5) with some pure good ol' rock and roll. Don't You Evah and The Underdog are two of my favorite tracks, but I can select any track from the album and enjoy it.

Honorable Mentions

Jesca Hoop - Kismet - Best female soloist around
LCD Soundsystem - Sound of Silver - Great party album
Seawolf - Leave in the River - The LA indie sound at it's finest.
Bonobo - Days to Come - Nice electronic album
