African Cup of Nations! The best soccer you can't watch!

Permalink 02/01/08 10:40, by jamesey, Categories: Everyone Else

I don't think anyone dislikes watching the African Cup of Nations. The tournament is all about goals, weak defenses, and showmanship. It's probably the most entertaining national team soccer tournament in the world. Unfortunately the only way to watch the tournament on TV in the USA is to have the lackluster Dish Network and subscribe to the Arab language programming. Thank goodness for TeleSud, an African news media site that has highlights. If you pay a small fee, you can watch the games live, but I have a hard time with giving my credit card information to an African company.

The first round of the tournament, which is taking place in Ghana ended yesterday. There were a few surprises. Morocco lost out to Guinea in advancing to the quarter-finals. Senegal and South Africa both lost out to Tunisia and Angola in the group of death. Cameroon, despite losing their first match to Egypt, look really good. Tunisia and Ghana are strong too.

Since the tournament is tough to follow, I can't update much. I'm sure at the end there will be a top 10 goals video going around, as well as some other highlights. Unfortunately youtube.com is not allowing the posting of ACN footage. That's a poor move on Africa's part if they want to promote their game.

FYI, you can also purchase the viewing rights through JumpTV.com. They're using the same provider as Telesud.

I've used JumpTV for over a year to watch Euro qualifiers and received excellent service with high-quality picture. Miles better than the pirate feeds as far as being able to see what's going on on the field. No strange charges showing up on my credit card, either.

We're doing heavy coverage on World Cup Blog (http://worldcupblog.org) and most of our preview posts include all of the viewing options any of us have found, both licit and not so much. You might check it out.

I'm loving the tournament and have seen at least one game every day of play. I'd highly recommend it.
