Pitchfork's Top 20 albums of the millenium
Pitchfork is a great site for discovering new music. They are on top of all the latest albums, singles, videos and news in the "indie rock" scene. Their smartly written reviews are often regarded as scripture as to whether music is good or not. Of course, they also have flaws like playing favorites and holding grudges. That's why many people have a love-hate relationship with the site. I use the site as more of a tool for discovery. I happen to love many albums they've bestowed poor ratings upon so I mostly ignore the reviews and just try out the daily samplings.
Over the last month pitchfork has released many features about the best music of the millenium. Today they finally got around to finalising their list of the top 200 albums of the millenium, and I was very interested to see how many of the top 20 albums I own or like.
20. Interpol - Turn on the Bright Lights - I like Interpol, but don't own any.
19. Spoon - Kill the Bright Light - I like this album, but it's not memorable to me
18. Kanye West - Late Registration - rap, I don't know it
17. LCD Sound System - Sound of Silver - Fantastic album, I listen to it often
16. Sufjian Stevens - Illionise - bleh, boring to me
15. The Knife - Silent Shout - I remember downloading this and promptly deleting it.
14. Animal Collective - Merriwhether Post Pavillion - Fun album. I can respect this choice although it wouldn't be top 50 for me.
13. Outkast - Stankonia - don't know it.
12. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells - Good stuff, but I'm not a huge fan
11. Ghostface Killah - Supreme Clientele - rap, don't know it
10. The Avalanches - Since I Left You - I would rank this as my favorite album of the decade. I've listened to it more than any other album over the last 9 years.
9. Panda Bear - Person Pitch - don't know it
8. Sigur Ros -Agaetis Byrjun - Sigur Ros has their niche and there is a time and place for it. I've never been too excited by them.
7. The Strokes - Is This It? - Definitely the most influential album of the millenium. It practically launced garage rock on it's own.
6. Modest Mouse - The Moon and Antarctica - Not a huge fan, but it is a good album
5. Jay Z - The Blueprint - rap...
4. Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot - Chris always chastises me for not liking Wilco.
3. Daft Punk - Discovery - I have great memories of bouncing around Austria while this played. Great album, and great accompanying movie (Interstellar 5555) to go with it.
2. Arcade Fire - Funeral - I like a couple songs off this one. I like Neon Bible way more.
1. Radiohead - Kid A - Top album. There isn't a bad song on this one. I'd put it top 10.
