A tribute to the bacon wrapped hot dog
I don't know the true name of this food. I shouldn't even call it food. It's more like a gift from the gods. You know how Eskimos have 57 words for snow? Well there are a lot of names I've heard given to the bacon wrapped hot dog. Mexi-dog, Tico-dog, Dodger wrap, Hoda, bacon wrap, Jeresey breakfast, Baja breakfast, and heart-attack-in-a-bun are all names I've heard for this delicacy. I typically eat these after soccer games at the Home Depot Center. Vendors will stroll around the parking lot, pushing their carts enticing everyone around with the amazing smell. I haven't had once since October and in the last two days, I've been reminded how much I miss them.
...
Yesterday after I ate lunch at work, I went to my car to roll down the windows because it was getting hot outside. The smell of the bacon wrap hit me, and I immediately followed my nose to the construction site directly next to my office. Sure enough, there was a bacon-wrap vendor pushing her cart around the site. I bought one for $2.00 and devoured it. I felt so greasy and dirty afterwards, but it was worth it. This morning I happened to be browsing the LA Riot Squad forums and noticed a post on how to make your own bacon-wraps. My mouth began watering again. I'll admit, the cheese in the recipe disgusts me a little bit, but not to the point that I won't try it.
I did a quick search for bacon wrapped hot dogs. I immediately joined this flickr group I found.
Carts like this can be found all over L.A. I know they're probably filthy and have years of trapped grease festering inside. But I don't care. The filth probably makes it better and the bacon wraps taste so good I can ignore the grossness. This also makes me skeptical of making your own bacon wraps at home. I think there needs to be some degree of filth for these to be good.
I'm not sure where I'll get my next fix. The Home Depot Center has tried to chase the vendors away from the stadium, so it's hard to get one after a Galaxy game. Construction in the lot next to my office is just starting, but I don't see (or smell) the vendor out there every day. If anyone has any hints or stories of the bacon wrap, please share.
