Roomate hunting: Craigslist vs Roommates.com
I've been looking for a roommate to occupy my now vacant second room. Here's what I've found using two services.
Craigslist - Free
Roommates.com - $20 for a month.
Craigslist - applicant's can't speak english. One person had a translator.
Roommates - German and Malaysian applicants speak better English than most Americans.
Craigslist - applicants try to haggle about the price of rent.
Roommates - applicants understand that the price I post is the price I mean.
Craigslist - had many (at least 6) scammers e-mail me about the place. While I wasn't close to falling for their scam, someone new to the Internet could easily be a victim.
Roommates - just one scammer
Craigslist - People without jobs were inquiring about the place.
Roommates - Everyone was a professional, or a student (Cal-Tech) who would pay through their scholarship.
Craigslist - some jerk had the audacity to complain about my place when he viewed it.
Roommates - Everyone was respectful.
Craigslist - Respondents asked if they can pay in ways other than monetary (cooking and cleaning, and one offered his body)
Roommates - Never asked that question.
I suppose the lesson is that the $20 spent on roommates.com resulted in a higher class of applicant. It's not surprising, but I didn't realize how many weirdos would contact me on craigslist. Out of the 30 or so replies I got on craigslist, only one was good. Of the 10 replies I've had on roomates.com, 8 have been good.
