Lucky Baldwin's Belgian Beer Fest

Permalink 02/19/08 12:11, by jamesey, Categories: Happenings

I must admit, I've become a little bit of a beer snob. I simply don't drink Coors, Bud, Corona, or Miller anymore. If I'm having a beer, it must meet two criteria.

1. Not be mostly water
2. Taste good.

...

Somehow I've discovered an affection for Belgian beers. They're not as thick and bitter as British beers. They're not as sharp as German beers. Belgians don't have the aftertaste I dislike as most American beers do. For me, the Belgians get it just right. I'm fortunate that my local pub specializes in the Belgian beers. I was thrilled to attend Lucky Baldwin's 9th annual Belgian Beer Fest this weekend.

Here's a .pdf of what was on tap. The first page is what my friends and I tried. The second page is a clean copy. We spent about $330 all together.

My favorites were
#23 Echt Kriekenbier - It wowed everyone. It was smooth like cough medicine and sweet tasting. Turns out, it's made with cherries!
#37 Monk's Flemish Sour Ale - This one was also sweet. It was strong, but didn't leave you with an overwhelming taste.
#59 De Glazen Toren Canaster Winterscotch - It's a mouthful...of goodness!! It was really dark, but not thick. You could definitely smell spices before drinking it, and the sweetness wasn't sugary.
#52 La Devine - Maybe by the time I got to this one, it was the beer speaking through me, but I immediately said "oooh, this one tastes like a cloud." On closer thought, that was definitely the beer speaking. La Devine was really smooth, and probably the best Belgian Blonde I had all day.

The festival lasts two more weekends, so I'll probably do back to LB's and try some more. If anyone wants to join me, send me a message.
