I watched 4 seasons of Battletar Galactica in 10 days
You know when everyone tells you that you'd enjoy something, and it gets hyped up so much you end up not wanting to see what all the fuss is about? That's what happened to me with Battlestar Galactica. The 2004 remake (or re-imagining as the creators call it) of the late 70's series should have been something I was into from the first day it was released. Instead I've waited 4 years later, until the series end to watch all 60-something episodes, plus 2 mini-series specials.
Follow up:

Battlestar Galactica is very gripping and intriguing. Even though the premise and setting are all sci-fi, issues of religion, politics, psychology, and philosophy pepper the episodes. The show really focuses on character development and relationships, and the sci-fi aspect adds interesting twists and turns. Off the top of my head, there are about 9 major characters. It's a lot to keep track of.
One aspect I really enjoyed was that no character is completely likable or completely despicable. The hero's commit dastardly acts in moments of panic, and the villains have soft moments that aren't always self-indulging. That aspect always kept things interesting and probably saves the series from becoming boring.
The over-arching story over the 4 seasons is that humans created robots called Cylons, who somehow develop souls and decide to kill humanity. The Cylons used to look metallic, full of wiring and computers, but they've developed "skin-jobs" that look and bleed like humans. Both groups are trying to find their way to Earth which they fled four thousand years ago.
Doctor Who and Torchwood are still my favorite sci-fi. While I really enjoy BG, there's a lot to keep up with. I want my sci-fi simple and fantastical. BG is deep and you really need to pay attention. That's not a bad thing, just not my favorite way to watch TV shows.
If you feel like watching BG, torrents of all 4 season's and the mini-series all abundant.
There are 4 seasons, with varying numbers of episodes. There is also a prequel mini-series and a mini-series between seasons 3&4 called Razor. Season 4 has 10 episodes left, but they won't air until 2009. Check out the wiki pages before you start too. Oh, there are a LOT of hot chicks on the show too.
