Het Anker night at Lucky Baldwins
Last night I took a trip to my amazing local pub, Lucky Baldwin's. Earlier that week an e-mail had gone out notifying locals that the 5th generation owner of the six century old brewer Het Anker would be in town with some special beers.
There were about 9 beers on the menu. Six of them had the Gouden Carolus name. I tried the Emporer's ale aged from 2002, a drink first created by nuns in a hospital in the 1500's for an ailing Emporer Philip. Of course it was great and way beyond the average beer. I followed that up with their Christmas Ale, which was a bit bitter for my taste, but most Christmas Ales are. To finish I had the Hopsinjoor, which is like a Belgian IPA. That was tasty and definitely meant to be eaten with food and sipped.
I got a change to speak with the owner who said his brewery is open for tours. I'm definitely adding Het Anker to my list of places to visit in Belgium.
