The Grilled Cheese Truck

Food trucks are all the craze in Los Angeles right now. The old stereotype of the nasty old roach coach has been replaced by one of Nomadic Gastro Pub. I think what makes all the trucks (Kogi, Gorditas, Fried Chicken, cup cakes, ice cream sandwhiches, pancakes, bento boxes, sushi, vegan and countless others) successful is their specialization. They take one food, and make it perfect. The fact that there kitchen is on wheels hardly matters. They have everything they need on the truck. Last night I got to stand 90 minutes in line, in the cold rain, for one of the most touted, the Grilled Cheese Truck.

This truck has received a lot of hype lately, and I've followed it's twitter before it was even mobile. I never had a chance to get over to it until its stop in Altadena last night. I was unsurprised by the line. It was really long. There wasn't much to do in line besides socialize with all the other crazy foodies waiting for a piece. That is actually a neat aspect of the popular food trucks. They've become a great social place for meeting like minded people.

I was actually the very last person in line, and the Grilled Cheese Truck people gave me a sign to hold stating that I was. They bribed me with some cookies and the promise of free tator tots with my order. I had to break a few hearts, and fortunately there were no bad eggs upset at me.

When I finally ordered, I had a Caprese Melt which consists of mozarella, tomatos, basil, and balsamic sauce. It was fantastic and really lived up to the hype. I had a cup of tomato soup for dipping and that made my fantastic sandwhich more special. Kait had a harvest melt and spicy mac and cheese. Both were excellent.

I highly recommend the grilled cheese truck. They really craft a great sandwhich and the prices are completely fair. If you're afraid of the wait in line, get there early, or bring friends. It's a social scene born from social networking. It's definitely a great meal.
